Aviation is one of the main fields in which I work. Although the lingua franca of the sector is clearly English, the translation needs of the aeronautical industry are enormous. Considering that the development and manufacturing of a single aircraft can require hundreds of thousands of pages of documentation, translating even 1% of that documentation would represent many months of full-time work for a translator.

Modern aircraft are among the most complex machines ever invented. For example, the Boeing 777 is made up of 132,500 unique parts, not counting the fasteners. Let us now consider a small part of the aircraft: the landing gear, which is not precisely one of the most complicated parts of the plane. Yet, even without going into the smallest pieces, do you think a translator without experience in this field could accurately translate the basic terms of the diagram below? And what if it were more complex parts?

Dictionaries and online resources are very unlikely to be sufficient for a professional translator to provide accurate translations in this field. To achieve a good translation, experience and engineering knowledge are essential.
