How to become a technical translator

Do you want to become a technical translator?

If you meet the requirements to become a technical translator, the next step is simple: start thinking of yourself as a technical translator. This is possible because, at least in Spain, there are no administrative entry barriers (degrees, state exams). Check the laws in your own country.

From now on, present yourself as a technical translator. Adapt your CV, create a website (even a simple one), design business cards, set up an email signature, etc.

If you were already a translator before specialising, you’ve essentially moved up a notch. Specialised roles sound more prestigious than generic ones. To the general public, “technical translator” or “legal translator” sounds better than just “translator,” much like “criminal lawyer” sounds more important than “lawyer,” and “medical secretary” better than “secretary.”
